    Hi everyone,
Most of you coming to the VX8300 forum probably already know me from the VX8300 blog at http://vx8300.blogspot.com. Well, Hellaphone is a somewhat more ambitious site that I was inspired to start thanks to all of the positive feedback I received from my VX8300 Blog readers. So, thank you all for that. If you're reading this, please do take a moment to register for the forums and drop in and say hi in this thread.

I have to agree, you rock the house Andy! What is your background, if I can ask? Do you work for Verizon in some capacity, or are you just a really brave user who is good at hacking? Does Verizon disapprove of any of the hacks you discuss?

I know you prefer the VCast music player over the MP3, but using VCast requires me to convert my files to WMA (I think one of the blog readers found out how to automate that somewhat), and when I tried to listen to a few WMA's, the phone could not play them. Not sure what's up there.

Hi Dave and Crowdraven87, thanks for joining the forums!
I hope I haven't mislead anyone about the extent of my expertise. I'm no Verizon employee, I'm just a college student who saw a gap in the internet where there should have been a unified, well written, useful cell phone guide. Some of the tricks and hacks I figured out myself, and many I refined myself, but honestly, most of the information presented on my blog was culled from stuff that other people figured out and posted on various corners of the internet. I just saw the need to synthesize it into a one stop source for all things VX8300, with a consistant writing style, and no need to tax the Google engine.
So that's pretty much what I'm trying to do with the Hellaphone wiki. I'm trying to make a one-stop source for simple, unified cell phone guides, this time for every phone on the market.
Regarding your WMA problem, it's important to note that if you have the latest firmware, my old comments are rendered moot. The new firmware will play MP3s just as easily as WMAs. Even if you have the old software, many people are content using the old MP3 player, so don't sweat it.
Glad you like the site, and hope you stick around the forums.
    Andy

I learned more in one evening reading your vx8300.blogspot blog than from a week of googleing for answers. It's a great resource, and I hope these forums prove to be just as valuable.

    Thanks!

I'm new to the 8300 and (so far) I like its features. I do not like the limitation of using V-Cast (& the MS formats) and will be sticking with mp3. I'm hoping that some specific posts about the best/worst features of the phone come to light here.

    Thanks for the forum!

Andy, it's guys like you that make the original nickname "hacker" something I'm proud to be a part of. Figuring out how things work and how to make them work the way we want them is what it's all about. Through your blogspot, I've proven my geek status in telling friends I hacked my phone :)
I'm not quite as bad as a Linux geek but a geek nontheless. Thanks man!

Thanks for the info especially BitPim. You probably already know this, but if you have the new firmware and sync with wmp it puts your music on as an mp3 if that is how they were stored on your computer.

    Hey Andy !

Just got my VX8300 about a month ago. For the most part I like it. I am coming from a Motorola E815, which was a sweet phone in itself. The VX8300 has some cool featurs too. With your help in your blog, I have learned more about the phone than I would have reading the manual, that's for sure.

    Thanks for your efforts.

Andy, I'm glad you've expanded and hope this will grow into a thriving, informative community. The info I got from your blog when I got my VX8300 a few months ago was invaluable.

I'm seeing a lot of the questions that were answered in the original blog being asked several times over in the forum, already. Also, questions that were answered in the comments section are being asked here. Suggestion: Get all the blog info migrated over to the wiki and sticky a post with the most FAQ, or a sticky telling people to read the wiki before posting.

    Thanks for the community!

Hi Andy and Forum members. I'm new here and am happy to read up on the VX8300. I just ordered my phone and it should arrive tomorrow. Glad I'm able to read up on the phone and get smart on it before I use it. Thanks to all here for the useful posts.

    Andy,

Thanks so much for both of the sites. I got my phone three days ago, and other than spending $30 for an upgraded version of DataPilot that I can't use with my BlueTooth, I am thrilled. The tips on BitPim saved my sanity. Calendar uploads and mp3 ringtones make the phone a homerun already. The tips on the headphone adapter and shutting off the phone while on a plane are just icing on the cake. I will continue to follow along just for the occasional unexpected tip that will make my day. Thanks again.

BTW: Have you seen www.watchmycell.com yet? neat little app.

    Hey Andy.

As many others have already said, I owe you a very big THANKS! Its people like you that make the internet a better place. I work as a web designer and generally pride myself on being resourceful when it comes to finding stuff online, but I was having very little luck until I cam across your site. Your documentation blows everyone else out of the water. I've had my LG VX8300 for less than one day, and I can already do much more with it than my old motorolla phone I've had for the past year. From now on I'm buying whatever phone you buy. Keep it up!

I wouldn't have figured out how to do most of this stuff with my phone if I hadn't found this forum. Thanks!

Andy, do you know of a .mp3 to .wma converter for MAC? Everything I've found converts FROM .wma, but NOT to it. Thanks, your blog and now your forums are a great help. I've added two ringtones, though in .mp3, to my new vx8300. yay for me! =-)

Hi Andy - just wondering if you can help. I am new to the posting thing, and have some questions.
***By the way - thanks for all you do with this thing, it is a great source of info.***
I posted a question called "How do I change the default Reminder Tone" and noticed when I went to check on it today I couldn't find it. It was way down on the list. Is there any way to keep it up towards the top, and also other than checking it everyday is there some type of notification when I get a response? I know that some forums will automatically email you when someone posts a comment on your question.
    Thanks!

Andy I first stopped at vx8300.blogspot.com and found a blog about Enabling MP3 for LG VX8300 and it seems that I'm having a bit of a problem. I think that blog was back in '06 so it may not be up to date.

Well anyways I followed the instructions to enabling MP3 and no success.

I get to "11. Music Settings"
    Press "OK"
    The phone response "NOT AVAILABLE"

So I'm not exactly sure what's going on. If you could please email me with answers that would be great. (train08 at gmail dot com)

I had my VX8300 for a few years already. Found this site from your blog.
Kids borrowed my phone for a week, and reprogramed my phone to make it "BETTER".

But now I'm lost. Told the kid to "Put it back" and he don't know how.

I'll be reading and exploreing your board... Thanks.

i'm sure this has an answer somewhere, but I couldn't find it. Is there a way to use my mp3s that are on my sd card as a ringtone without using a data cable from my computer? Do I have to buy the music kit from verizon in order to get a data cable if it's necessary?

So I have the LG VX8300. I dropped it for the millionth time yesterday and finally the screen broke. Now its just the screen that broke. It doesn't light up or anything. But the BODY of the phone still works. I still get phone calls and people can hear me talk but I can't hear them.
I took it to a Verizon store - said there was nothing that could be done.
    That's a bummer but expected.
My question is this. Is there anyway I can retrieve my inbox of messages from this phone somehow? Could I use the MicroSD drive to copy them over? If I had another new VX8300 could I find the same steps (like what keys to press) and then do it on my broken phone without looking at the screen since its broken but because the body of the phone still works, could somehow transfer them? I just have some meaningful texts I want to have. I appreciate the help.
    Thanks

I'm a Page Plus customer and am forced to buy a refurbished phone from 2005. I've been going crazy trying to decide between the VX8300 and the Motorola E815. The main reason I'm leaning toward this is because it uses a micro SD card, so it's not quite as antiquated. I've never had an LG phone.

But I'm ecstatic to find a discussion with entries as recent as a few months ago (even if nobody's answering them). All the info I found on the E815 seemed to stop in 06, so I'm hopeful I'm making the right choice as this seems to still be loved and used by people. Only thing is I am not a geek and I won't have any of the Verizon features. I hope I'll be happy with it. Anybody out there before I go ahead and buy it?
